Discover Lagar Restaurant

Walking into Lagar Restaurant at 1252 Stuyvesant Ave., Union, NJ 07083, United States, feels like stepping into one of those neighborhood diners that somehow never loses its charm. I first stopped by on a rainy Wednesday after a late shift, half-expecting the usual greasy spoon routine. Instead, I was greeted with the smell of slow-simmered soups and fresh bread, and a server who actually remembered my name when I came back two weeks later. That small detail alone says a lot about how this place runs.

The menu leans classic American diner, but with enough twists to keep things interesting. Breakfast is served all day, and I’ve personally tested that promise more times than I’ll admit. Their omelets are fluffy rather than rubbery, which is harder to pull off than it sounds. According to research from the American Egg Board, proper low-and-slow cooking preserves moisture and protein structure, and that’s exactly what you taste here. One of the cooks once explained how they whisk eggs in small batches instead of dumping everything into a big container, a simple process that keeps texture consistent across plates.

Lunch is where the regulars really shine. I watched a group of construction workers polish off burgers and grilled chicken wraps while debating which soup was best. Someone loudly declared best chicken noodle in Union, and no one argued. Their broth is clear, not cloudy, which food science folks at the Culinary Institute of America say is a sign of careful skimming and controlled boiling. It’s not fancy, but it’s comforting in a way chain diners never manage.

Dinner service has a surprisingly loyal crowd too. On my last visit, I shared a booth with a retired couple who said they’ve been coming here since it was under different management years ago. They swore the current team made it better without changing the soul of the place. That lines up with what I’ve read in local community reviews, where people consistently mention friendly staff and fast service alongside fair prices. Yelp and Google Maps ratings both hover comfortably above four stars, which for an independent diner in New Jersey is no small feat.

The kitchen sticks to transparent processes, something that builds trust. You can see short-order cooking in action, from fresh fries going into the fryer to sandwiches being assembled to order. The National Restaurant Association often stresses that visibility and consistency are top factors in customer confidence, and Lagar clearly takes that to heart. Still, I’ll admit I haven’t tried every single item, especially the seafood specials, so there may be parts of the menu I’m less familiar with.

What really keeps people coming back is how the restaurant fits into daily life. Students stop in for pancakes before exams. Parents bring kids after soccer practice. Office workers grab takeout when they’re too tired to cook. During a small community fundraiser last fall, the owner donated trays of baked ziti, showing they’re more than just another place to eat. That kind of real-world example is what hospitality experts like Danny Meyer often talk about when they describe building loyalty through genuine connection rather than flashy marketing.

If you scan the online reviews, you’ll see phrases like home away from home and worth the drive from Elizabeth, and those aren’t exaggerations. I’ve driven past closer spots just to eat here because I know exactly what I’m getting. The address is easy to find, parking is usually available on the street, and the dining room is clean without feeling sterile. The only limitation I’ve noticed is that peak hours can mean a short wait, especially on weekends, but honestly, that just proves how popular the place has become.

For anyone browsing Union locations looking for a reliable diner with heart, the name keeps popping up for good reason. Between the thoughtful menu, consistent food quality, and a team that treats guests like neighbors, it earns its reputation one plate at a time.

  • What can I say? This place has always impressed us every time we come. The owner of Rodrigo is such a great guy always acknowledges us when he’s on the premise Boris the manager another great guy will do above and beyond even doing a party will honor a request. The food is always on point have a really good filet mignon and shrimp last night. We also love their shrimp and garlic can’t go along with their paella as well. Try their happy hour. It’s one of our favorites in the area.

  • Celebrated my birthday today. Our server John was very friendly attentive and made great recommendations. Service was top notch. The standard Portuguese dishes were excellent. Highly recommend the garlic shrimp, caldo verde. Loved the oxtail special that was available today.

  • The drinks were great, but I'm a vegeterian and the vegeterian options are minimal. The vegeterian section of their menu has seafood in it so when I asked the waiter he said they could make one of the dishes vegeterian, but I played it safe and had potatoes from the appetizer menu. The chocolate mousse was delicious! My meat eating friend said the food was great.

  • I tried the steak with eggs along with the sliders, and each bite was full of flavor. The drinks were super refreshing and perfectly made. The bottomless mimosas were totally worth it. The staff were warm, friendly, and made my special day even more memorable. Truly a wonderful experience!

  • Restaurant is very photogenic inside and out! So floral and enchanting! The food was good but some dishes could have been better. I ordered the grilled veal chops with the veggies and mashed potatoes and the meat was too salty for me but overall it was delicious. Remember not every experience will be the same. Restaurants don’t always have the same person making a certain dish so definitely try them out for yourself! I loved the bread they gave at the start it was so fresh! They also give you some olives with it too which was tasty. I loved the beef short ribs and cocktails were on point! I had the snowflake martini, if you love coquito or coconut with cinnamon, you would love it! The orange sorbet wasn’t the best. The shots were so good loved the mango juice at the bottom! If you hate cooking for the holidays then just make a reservation with them to do your family dinner at Lagar. It is also great for birthdays and girls night out they have good deals. Servers were very attentive, service was very nice and welcoming. Would love to try what other dishes they have as well as their appetizers!

  • I visited Lagar for my birthday dinner on a Friday night. I've been passing this place for years and from now on, I know I will be a regular customer. I had an amazing experience from start to finish. The customer service was exceptional from the moment I walked in. I made reservations indoors but was quickly accommodated when I asked to sit in the patio when I saw how beautiful it was! John was very friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive the entire night. The food came out so quickly and was delicious! The live musician was singing some great throwbacks that I love too! The decor was beautiful for my birthday photos. I had the best time and I loved everything I ate and drank! Food Suggestions: Camarão à Lagar, Pistachio Coppa, Crème brûlée Drink Suggestions: Blue Sangria, Espresso drink, and Mango drink in the photo that I forgot the name of. I highly recommend this restaurant!
